07/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 6 November, Piero Fassino was appointed EU Special Envoy to Burma/Myanmar. Fassino, a former Italian foreign trade and, also, justice minister, will coordinate the European Union's efforts to bring about “positive change in Burma/Myanmar,” says a press release from EU High Representative Javier Solana. It goes on to say that this appointment “underlines the importance that the EU attaches to democratic change, reconciliation, and the improvement of the human rights situation” in the country. Fassino will work closely with Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari.
