EU wants to strengthen cooperation with ICAO, especially on air safety and security

Brussels, 07/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 7 September, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (Coreper) approved the information paper that is to be submitted to the 36th session of the International Civilian Aviation Organisation (ICAO) assembly to be held from 18-28 September in Montreal. The document, to be presented by the EU presidency during the session and developed on the basis of information provided by Commission services, should brief ICAO members on the EU's commitment to cooperate with the international air transport community. Above all, the EU would like to strengthen cooperation in the field of air security and safety, on environmental issues and at the level of infrastructure. The document also recommends strengthened cooperation in technology, especially with a view to improving international air traffic management. The EU finally hopes to “normalise” the air transport sector from the economic point of view in order to ensure that international air transport is a viable and competitive sector in which the same conditions apply to all, the document states.
