Various levels of warming on agenda for first thematic session of temporary committee on climate change

Brussels, 07/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The work of the European Parliament's temporary committee on climate change, chaired by Guido Sacconi (PES, Italy), is being ratcheted up with the organisation of thematic sessions on key issues for the EU and its international partners. The first of these sessions, to be held in Brussels on 10 September, will be on the theme of the “Climate impact of different levels of warming”.

The discussion will be led by MEP Vittorio Prodi (ALDE, Italy) and the key-note speaker will be Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. Several prominent scientific and technical experts will also take part in the debate.

The second thematic session, on a “Post-2012 International Climate Change Framework” will be held on 4 October.

Temporary committee rapporteur, Karl Heinz Florenz will be supported in his task by each of the main speakers invited to these sessions.

The meeting of the temporary Parliamentary committee held in Strasbourg on 6 September, on the sidelines of the plenary session, was devoted in part to preparations for the first thematic session. The remainder of the meeting focused on the preparation of the European Parliament's position ahead of the 13th conference of the parties to the United Nations framework convention on climate change (COP 13, Bali, 3-14 December) and consideration of a draft resolution on the European Commission communication on limiting global warming to 2º Celsius - the path to be followed for the Bali conference on climate change and beyond. The draft resolution will be voted on in the plenary session at the end of September or in October.

The European Parliament has already decided to send a delegation to Bali from 12-14 December for the ministerial section of the negotiations. This delegation will include, in addition to the members of the temporary committee, the members of the environment and industry committees. (an)
