19/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - According to a survey carried out by Harris Interactive and published in the Financial Times on 18 June, a large majority of British, French, German, Italian and Spanish citizens want their governments to hold a referendum on the future EU treaty. 75% in Spain, 71% in Germany, 69% in the United Kingdom, 68% in Italy and 64% in France believe the future treaty should be put to the people. Those interviewed, however, did not support the idea of a permanent EU presidency to replace the current 6-month rotating presidency. On average only 46% of Europeans favoured this idea, with the least support, 14%, being found in the United Kingdom and greatest support, 54%, in Spain. The response to the proposal for an EU foreign minister was more favourable, with was 77% supporting the idea. (hb)
