GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/reform of the eu/trade unions

19/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - As part of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) campaign in support of fundamental rights, social Europe and more better quality jobs, a delegation of European trade unionists, led by John Monks, will meet European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso this Wednesday at around 11.30, to set out the arguments for the inclusion of the Charter of Fundamental Rights in any new European constitutional treaty. As they have often repeated, this Charter must be binding on member states. Otherwise, trade unions threaten to go on the offensive against the new treaty (as the emergency declaration adopted at the Seville Congress on 24 May states, see EUROPE 9433) and will call on the EP not to endorse any new text which does not include the Charter. There will be a Trade Union assembly in support of the Charter of Fundamental Rights at the Rond-Point Schuman in Brussels, this Wednesday from 11.30 am until 1.00 pm. (gb)
