19/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission presented a draft joint declaration from the Parliament and the Council, aimed at organising a European Day against the Death Penalty on 10 October every year. The joint declaration is expected to be signed by the EU institutional triangle and the Council of Europe on 9 October in Lisbon, during an international conference. In 2006, the most conservative of estimates put the figure of those executed at 1,591 in 25 countries and those condemned to death at 3,861 at least in 55 countries. (bc)
