15/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - After validation of the results of the presidential elections of 11 March by the Constitutional Council of the Republic of Senegal, the German EU Council presidency welcomed, on Thursday, the “peaceful way in which the presidential elections unfolded”, also congratulating President Abdulaye Wade on his re-election. With this victory, acquired from the first round with nearly 56% of the votes, the outgoing president is re-elected for a second term of office (five years compared to seven previously). In a declaration published on Thursday, the EU presidency congratulates the people of Senegal for its remarkable turnout and its active commitment to democracy, adding that the smooth unfolding of the ballot may be interpreted as further proof of the well-established democratic tradition in Senegal.
