15/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Italian radicals, Marco Cappato and Marco Pannella, both MEPs, are calling for the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome not to be the “umpteenth demonstration of European rhetoric” but rather to provide an opportunity to reactivate a “political, federalist and democratic Europe”. On 14 March, they began to collect MEPs' signatures on a declaration that, considering decisions on Union reforms must directly involve “the European people”, call for the future reform proposals of the European treaties to be put to “European referendums”, in which all European citizens should take part, at the same time. Messrs Pannella and Cappato - who were joined by French Green member Gérard Onesta, Forza Italia member Riccardo Ventre, and the Polish Socialist, Josef Pinior - invite the conference of the presidents of political groups to consult the constitutional affairs committee on this matter.
