15/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The declaration to be signed by the 27 EU member states in Berlin on 25 March will probably not contain a reference to the Judeo-Christian roots of the European Union, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with ZDF television. Initially, Ms Merkel had envisaged such a reference but she now feels it could pose difficulties and that it is better to “underline what unites us”. The reaction by Poland's prime minister, Jaroslev Kaczynsky (who is to greet Ms Merkel on Friday when she makes a two-day visit to Poland), was immediate. He said: “These comments concern me (…). Ms Merkel is being put under pressure”. (lg)
