Brussels, 07/02/2007 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel, will be in Washington, USA on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 February to attempt to give fresh impetus to efforts to relaunch the Doha cycle trade negotiations. She is likely to re-iterate the European Commission's criticisms of the new Farm Bill presented on 31 January by the US administration. The Commission believes that for the Doha cycle to succeed the USA must accept more ambitious reductions in internal support (EUROPE 9357 and 9358). Ms Fischer Boel will take up these issues with the US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, and US Trade Representative Susan Schwab. The commissioner will also meet Tom Harkin and Collin Peterson, respectively the new presidents of the agriculture committees in the Senate and House of Representatives. (lc)
