Brussels, 14/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 12 December, the European Commission decided to refer Greece to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failure to respect European legislation in respect of the single European sky. The single European sky framework regulation came into force in April 2004. It separates the provision of air navigation services on the one hand, and the supervision and regulation of these services on the other. It requires Member States to create or establish an independent national supervisory authority to assume the different tasks identified in EU legislation, including the certification of air navigation service providers and on-going monitoring of compliance with Community requirements. Until now, Greece has failed to fully establish an independent authority, says the Commission. After sending two reasoned opinions, without receiving a satisfactory response, the Commission has decided to move to the next stage in the infringement procedure. (dt)
