Sylvie Goulard takes on presidency

Brussels, 14/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - Sylvie Goulard, who had been one of Romano Prodi's fellow workers at the European Commission, was elected on 9 December as President of the European Movement France, against the outgoing president, Pierre Moscovici (European representative of the Socialist Party and former Minister for European Affairs), after a bitter battle. Le Monde of 12 December cites Ms Goulard, a university professor, who comments on her victory against a political decision maker: “We have noted that politicians do not have time to deal with the movement (…) After the no-vote at the referendum (on the European Constitution), it is particularly important to be able to make the independent voices of parties heard on Europe. The challenge over coming months is to know whether we are going to question candidates to the presidential elections (in France). This is easier if you are not in campaign headquarters”. (mg)
