Commission again confronts issue of violent games

Brussels, 14/12/2006 (Agence Europe) - The vice-president of the European Commission, Franco Frattini, has confirmed his decision to tackle the diffusion of violent games in the EU. “Violence and sadism in digital games (internet, playstations and other electronic games) is clearly a subject of concern”, he said on Wednesday during a speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg. As he had reminded European justice ad home ministers early December, the Commissioner specified that he planned to take advantage of implementation of the communication for a European children's rights strategy by bringing the matter up for discussion at the European Forum on Children's Rights early 2007. Mr Frattini intends to put it to the Forum that a structured debate be held according to what he calls the “4 Ps: Parents, Professionals, Producers and Politicians”, each of these 4 categories being “partially responsible” for access to violent content by children. He finally said he would be proposing a communication on cyber crime in spring 2007. After France, Germany may toughen its policy for regulating the most violent video games, authorising criminal proceedings against developers, but also against players. In November this year, a young 18-year old German video game enthusiast had gone to his former school firearm in hand, and had wounded 11 students before taking his own life. (bc)
