Brussels, 18/10/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 19-20 October, the European Commission will host a conference in Brussels, “Towards a European Master's in Translation (EMT)”. Experts from all EU Member States, plus Bulgaria and Romania will attend. Some 70 higher education institutions offering teaching in translation will thus be represented, along with international organisations, such as the UN, NATO and the OECD, and professional associations to discuss developments in translator training in the EU. The conference will be the first step towards a standard curriculum for a Master's degree in translation within the EU and is one of the initiatives to promote multilingualism in the EU that the Commission communication of last November (COM(2005)596) announced. The purposes of the EMT conference are: - the promotion of multilingualism by strengthening the Commission's DG Translation's ties with universities involved in translation research and teaching; - the introduction of a specific EMT curriculum in key universities in the EU Member States and acceding countries; - the creation of networks of universities to develop the EMT; - the enhancement of dialogue with the universities to encourage them to develop their teaching programmes in line with the EMT standard curriculum proposed by DG Translation.
