Heavy European agenda on sidelines of General Assembly

Brussels, 18/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana and Benita Ferrero-Waldner are in New York from 18 to 22 September, to take part in the General Assembly of the UN, but also to attend a series of meetings, on such topics as the Middle East, Iraq and the Iranian nuclear dossier. On 19 September, the foreign affairs ministers of the EU are preparing for a meeting of the Quartet on the Middle East, which is due to be held on 20 September. Ms Ferreo-Waldner will hold talks with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the foreign affairs ministers of Israel, Tzipi Livni, Egypt, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and Jordan, Abdella Al-Khativ, and with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amre Moussa. The ministers of the EU will also meet their American and Russian counterparts, on 22 September. Meetings of the ministerial troika of the EU are planned, with: - the Organisation of the Islamic Countries (20 September); - Japan, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Kofi Annan, the Iraqi foreign affairs Minister, Hoshtar Zebari (21 September); - the Río Group, China (22 September. Ms Ferrero-Waldner and Mr Solana will take part in a meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the G8.
