Brussels, 28/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Montenegrin parliament is to meet on 1 March to adopt the modalities for the referendum on the independence of Montenegro. On Tuesday, the Montenegrin government and opposition agreed that the majority required for decreeing Montenegro's independence is 55%, as recommended by the European Union, while the rate of turnout at the referendum required for a valid result had already been fixed at 50%. At the time of going to press, both parties were still discussing the date when the referendum should be held under the auspices of the EU Special Representative Miroslav Lacjak (who suggested that it should be held by 14 May at the latest, at the same time as the municipal elections). Both parties were also to agree on the wording of the question to be asked during the referendum (see related article).
