Referendum on independence must comply with democratic standards and not affect SAA, Olli Rehn says

Brussels, 08/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, Commissioner Olli Rehn (enlargement) reminded the prime minister of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, that a future referendum on the independence of Montenegro should respect the constitutional charter of the state union, but also international standards. “If there were such a referendum, it is also important that nothing distracts from the SAA negotiations”, Mr Rehn warned, speaking to the press alongside Mr Djukanovic. The prime minister of Montenegro confirmed his intention to organise a referendum on the independence of Montenegro in April 2006. “We are absolutely ready to respect democratic principles and European practices in the procedure”, Mr Djukanovic said.
