08/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Given the growing opposition of the populations in question, in Piedmont, to the construction of the Lyons-Turin TGV, the vice president of the Commission in charge of Transport, Jacques Barrot, has appealed for calm ("the solutions do not lie in confrontation"), and announced the launch of an "independent expertise" to examine the "all the issues raised", and to check whether "the responses are sufficiently complete". On the other side, the French Green members of the European Parliament have voiced their solidarity with those taking part in demonstrations in the de Susa Valley, speaking out against the "repression of an isolated incident of violence" by the Italian police. Marie-Hélène Aubert, Jean-Luc Bennahmias, Hélène Flautre, Marie-Anne Isler Béguin, Alain Lipietz and Gérard Onesta are calling for a transparent assessment of the impact of the project on the region, and are calling for a voluntary and coordinated transport policy in the alpine area (with greater transfer of goods from road to rail), a proper scale of tariffs for using the road, social and fiscal harmonisation within the sector, and aid for combined transport.
