Brussels, 08/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - Young members of the EPP-DE (aged under 36) met the President of the Ecofin Council and the Eurogroup Jean-Claude Juncker, who assured them that the changes to the Stability and Growth Pact “would not have negative long-term effects but ensure [its] survival for the years to come”, a communication indicates. The 23 youngest members of the EPP-DE group expressed their concerns for future generations following the adjustments to the Pact. These changes meets their expectations in terms of clear and transparent rules, but from the point of view of sustainability, they are arguing for implementation of the Pact which conforms to the basic rules, ensures that sanctions are imposed in case of infringement and offers better mechanisms to enforce the Pact. The Parliament and Commission should also have more say in guaranteeing proper functioning of the reformulated Pact, say the young MEPs.
