Javier Solana pleased with Serbia-Montenegro progress on cooperation with ICTY

Brussels, 08/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) chief Javier Solana on Thursday praised Serbia's recent progress in improving cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). “Cooperation with the ICTY has, in the last period of time, been very successful and we hope very much that it will continue with the same commitment”, he said after a meeting with a number of EU leaders in Belgrade, reports AFP. As a result of intense international pressure, several Serbian and Bosnian Serb officers have recently surrendered to the ICTY and others should do so in the next few days, Serbian diplomats have indicated. During his stay Mr Solana, together with Serbia-Montenegro's Prime Minister and President, also signed an agreement allowing the Union's constitutional Charter to be amended to prolong federal parliament deputies' mandates until new elections are held. The parliamentarians' mandate expired in March but the two bodies have been unable to agree on new elections. “We have had to overcome a number of difficulties in improving relations between Serbia-Montenegro and the EU … I think that today we have overcome the last”, Mr Solana told the press. This is opportune since on 12 April the European Commission must in principle adopt its feasibility study for Serbia-Montenegro, the first step towards EU membership.
