Brussels, 08/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission finally put an end on Friday to the polemic caused by Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs thoughts on a single speed limit for Europe's motorways (EUROPE 8923). Asked by the German press about the International Energy Agency's (IEA) report which is due to be published at the end of the month and which calls on OECD countries to take drastic measures to save oil (EUROPE 8921), Mr Piebalgs said that the IEA's suggestion to reduce speeds to 90 kilometres per hour on motorways was “not a bad idea”. “The Commission has no powers on matters of speed limits in the EU. Speed limits are purely a matter for Member States”, explained Françoise Le Bail, spokesperson for the European Commission, on Friday.
