First Euro-Mediterranean meeting on information and communication technologies

Brussels, 08/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - A ministerial meeting of countries from the Euro-Mediterranean area (the EU and its 10 Mediterranean partner countries) on information and communication technologies will be held on 10 and 11 April at Dundalk, Ireland. This meeting, the first of its kind, will look at ways to “make the information society accessible to all citizens”. It is being organised by the Irish government; the Luxembourg presidency and the European Commission, and will include Tunisia, which is to host the UN's World Summit on the Information Society next November. A meeting of senior officials has been tasked with examining two topics: electronic communications and strategies concerning broadband communications and online services. Participants will tackle issues such as the regulatory framework, EU member states' experience and the role of the private sector, and closer EuroMed cooperation. The meeting will also allow treatment of the themes of European Neighbourhood Policy, the Barcelona Process, and the promotion of structured dialogue on the information society, and should lead to the adoption of a declaration.
