Brussels, 05/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday Microsoft sent a letter to the European Commission outlining certain points that the company will implement in an effort to comply with the inter-operability obligation between Windows and rival products. The Commission's decision adopted last year consists of three areas: a 497 million fine, the obligation of providing a Windows version that does not include Media Player software and the obligation of providing information on software inter-operability (EUROPE 8673). Pointing out its authority to impose financial sanctions, the Commission recently called on the US firm to correctly apply this latest remedy and for it to share the technical data in a way that its competitors found suitable (EUROPE 8912). According to a Microsoft spokesperson, quoted by Associated Press, the company had proposed extending the period for competitors accessing data protocols from two to eight days and to reduce prices by 500 euros a day. The issue of single licences will also be broached, insofar as flexibility will be proposed that is based on consumers needs. The Commission has announced that it opposes a mechanism that will mean customers paying for certain things that are not in their interest. Microsoft will also revise he royalties system downwards and which until now had represented a price band for licences that went from 100 dollars to 600 dollars per server. One point still pending involves access to data protocol by companies specialised in open source data, such as Linux. Granting licences of this kind would enable the company to freely share data, unlike Microsoft which sees this at an attack on its intellectual property rights. The Commission has indicated that it is too early to provide an answer to Microsoft's letter and that it wanted to assess it in more detail.
