05/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 30 March, Anna Maria Campogrande, a member of staff at the European Commission, wrote to European Commissioner Jan Figel, who is responsible for multi-lingualism (outside education and culture), in protest at the removal of “major European languages” (French, Italian, German and Spanish) “in the everyday running of the Commission”. Under these circumstances, how can you be credible in the defence of multi-lingualism, when you personally choose always to speak English, Ms Campogrande asked the Slovakian Commissioner, warning him that if the use of these languages is phased out, the institutions “will be cutting off direct contact with the citizens”.
