Brussels, 05/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - A meeting is scheduled for 7 April in Brussels between an Australian delegation and the European Commission for continuing negotiations with a view to concluding a horizontal air agreement, Commission sources told EUROPE. The aim is to make the existing bilateral agreements between the EU Member States and Australia conform to Community law by eliminating discriminatory provisions. The horizontal agreement will allow any European airline to gain access to the Australian market from any Member State, contrary to the bilateral agreements that only authorise them to fly to Australia from their state of origin. If all goes well, the agreement could be initialled on Thursday, the same source said. Australia would be added to the list of countries with which the Commission has already initialled such agreements: New Zealand, Chile, Lebanon, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Albania. The ball is now in the court of the Council which must decide whether or not to sign the agreements. In the meantime, in the weeks or months to come, the Commission plans to undertake negotiations with other countries such as Jordan, Serbia-Montenegro, Ukraine and Argentina.
