04/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - CSU MEP Markus Ferber has sharply attacked Chancellor Schröder for having announced that if necessary, he would act unilaterally to obtain the lifting of the arms embargo on China. In a press statement, the MEP pointed out that the European Union could not take such a decision at unanimity and criticised Schröder for losing sight of reality when he asserted that he was ready to fight for the lifting of the arms embargo even if it meant going against the wishes of the Bundestag. Mr Ferber announced that the human rights situation in China remained precarious and that recent mass demonstrations of a million Taiwanese against forced union with the People's Republic of China showed that Peking's policy continued to be considered as aggressive.
