Parliament set to take position next week on specific visas for researchers

Brussels, 04/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - Next Tuesday, the European Parliament is finally to return its opinion on the proposed directive which aims to make it easier for researchers to enter and remain on the territory of the European Union, which dates back to 18 March 2004, and the idea for which was started by former European Commissioner for Research, Philippe Busquin, three years ago. If it goes along with the proposals of its rapporteur, the French Socialist Vincent Peillon, the Parliament will get behind the Commission's plans to create specific residence permits for non-European researchers at its plenary vote planned for Tuesday 12 April in Strasbourg. The draft directive, which was penned by the services of the Commissioners Busquin and Vitorino, provides for a simplification of the administrative procedures for researchers who have been invited to come and work on a project of over three months to obtain a residence permit. There are also plans to make circulation and the renewal of residence documents easier. The report by Vincent Peillon proposes that the draft text should be reinforced by added guarantees on family reunification and access to social security systems.
