Brussels, 10/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni, the co-presidents of the EP's Greens/EFA group, have welcomed the “historic decision” of the European Patent Office (EPO) which definitively cancels a patent taken out on the neem, an Indian tree, and thus “delivers the death blow to bio-piracy in Europe and the world”. Neem has been used in India for thousands of years in farming, health, medicine and in the production of toiletries and cosmetics.
