THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/china

10/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - German MEPs from four political groups - Elmar Brok (CDU), Erika Mann (SPD), Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (FDP), Cem Özdemir (Greens) - have written to Chancellor Schröder to express concern about the “efforts of the German government at the European Council to obtain lifting of the arms embargo against China”. They explain that they are now concerned for human rights, and for the strategic stability of North East Asia (they mention North Korea and Taiwan, as well as the absence in the region of security structures allowing conflicts to be settled through diplomacy). They also voice concern about transatlantic relations (recalling that the House of Representatives in Washington voted by 411 votes to 3 against lifting the embargo).
