10/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - “The euro and myself are the only survivors of Maastricht”, Jean-Claude Juncker said on Thursday in Luxembourg during a colloquy of the Ecofi think-tank (to which we shall return at a later date). Recalling that last Monday, he was the only minister at the Eurogroup table to have taken part in the creation of EMU, Mr Juncker admitted that the Stability and Growth Pact “has its strengths but also its weaknesses”. What, he asked, had been missed at the time (when the Pact was launched)? The answer is: the level of debt was neglected as well as differentiated application of the Pact depending on the economic cycle, and there was no emphasis on the preventive dimension. Reform of the Pact and the Lisbon Strategy are “two events of equal importance”, he said on the subject of the next spring summit.
