EU insists all political prisoners should be released

Brussels, 10/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Luxembourg Minister for European Affairs, Nicolas Schmit, met Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque on Wednesday in Strasbourg. A press release from the Luxembourg Presidency explains that the meeting mainly covered relations between the EU and Cuba after the decision by the Cuban authorities early this year to resume normal diplomatic relations with the European embassies in La Havana, and the EU Council's decision to temporarily suspend all measures taken in June 2003 against Cuba. The two ministers also discussed political and economic developments in Cuba. In this context, Mr Schmit pointed out that the EU remains willing to maintain constructive dialogue with the Cuban authorities with a view to reaching tangible results in the political, economic, cooperation and human rights fields. As far as respect of human rights is concerned, Mr Schmit restated the EU's appeal in favour of releasing all 75 political prisoners held since March 2003, and urged Cuban authorities to also release all the other political prisoners still in detention. Mr Schmit recalled that the European Union's move to suspend measures on 5 June 2003 will be reviewed before July 2005, while Luxembourg still holds EU Council Presidency, in the light of the developments in Cuba.
