United Kingdom will have to face Court over severity of its customs policy on private tobacco imports

Brussels, 20/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to take the United Kingdom to the Court of Justice in an attempt to get the country to show more flexibility to its citizens when importing large quantities of tobacco from the continent. The European Commission considers that British customs apply "disproportionate sanctions" when they apprehend vehicles and goods belonging to people importing tobacco to re-sell to relatives without making a profit.
