13/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - Monica Frassoni, Co-President of the Greens/EFA Group at the European Parliament, welcomes the fact that the Nobel Peace Prize is being awarded to Wangari Mathaai, leader of the Green Party in Kenya, who has also been Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources since 2002 and who belongs to the "Green Belt Movement" that is fighting against deforestation in Africa. This choice demonstrates that the battle of the ecologists is a battle in favour of peace, a press release from the EP Greens states. Monica Frassoni, who notes that last year's Nobel Prize went to a woman, Shirin Ebadi, recalls that, in 1998, the European Greens had organised with African Greens, including Wangari Mathai, an Euro-African conference on, among other things, common concerns regarding the environment, sustainable development and emigration.
