50TH ANNIVERSARY OF MODIFIED BRUSSELS TREATY

Brussels, 11/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Assembly of the Western European Union (WEU) is organising a series of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing, in Paris on 23 October 1954, of the agreements to modify the 1948 Brussels Treaty. Events to be held are:

- a conference at the Belgian Senate on 20 October in Brussels with the participation of the Director General for Politico-Military Affairs at the EU Council, Robert Cooper, and of the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Alessandro Minuto Rizzo. The conference will be preceded by a ceremony in which many public figures will take part including the president of the Senate, Anne-Marie Lizin

- A reception in the reception rooms of the French Foreign Minister, in the presence of Minister Michel Barnier, on 21 October at Quai d'Orsay, Paris.

- A conference on the next challenges of the European Security and Defence Policy, on 22 October at the French Senate in Paris, with the participation of General Jean-Paul Perruche, Director of the EU Chief of Staff, and Jacques Bayet, Director for Armaments with the New EU Defence Agency. The conference will be followed by a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe (Info: http: //assembly.weu.int).
