13/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 13 October, the European Commission decided to send a reasoned opinion to the UK, accusing it of having infringed the Euratom treaty by authorising the elimination of radioactive waste belonging to Atomic Weapons Establishments (AWE) in Aldermaston and Burghfield. In a press release, the Commission stresses that neither before, during or after the authorisation procedure did the British authorities notify the elimination plan to the Commission to be assessed, as per article 37 of the Euratom treaty. If London does not come into line with the requirements of the reasoned opinion within the stated time, the Commission could take the matter to the Court of Justice.
