Brussels, 06/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 30 March, the Council of the EU adopted a directive reinforcing the safety of aircraft from third countries operating on Community territory. The directive, which will enter into force the day of its publication in the Official Journal, provides, amongst other things, the possibility for the European Commission to name carriers which are not fulfilling international safety criteria, in its annual report on third-country aircraft safety. The European Parliament and the Council agreed in conciliation on a draft directive on 27 January, which was adopted by the Parliament last Thursday, at its plenary session in Strasbourg (Maes report: EUROPE of 3 April, p.12).
