THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/european council/terrorism

29/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - CDU member Karl von Wogau considers in a press release on the means at the EU's disposal for combating terrorism that "it is not enough to have a coordinator" (as decided last Thursday by the European Council). In the long term, the European Union should, he believes, have its own intelligence service while, in the meantime, allowing Europol and Eurojust to play their roles fully. In order to increase security in Europe, it is necessary to act outside Europe also, Mr von Wogau notes, considering in particular that, in order to stamp out opium poppy crops in Afghanistan in order to win the fight against the scourge of drugs, it would be necessary to encourage profitable alternative crops there, for example local spices that can be sold at a high price.
