Brussels, 22/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Council of Ministers of the Member States of the EU adopted without debate a regulation banning the use of bottom trawls in the protected coral reef zone in north-west Scotland (see EUROPE of 16 March, p.12). The protection of coral reefs in deep water (Lophelia pertusa), known as the "Darwin Mounds", concerns largely Irish and French boats which fish in this area, which comes under the United Kingdom's jurisdiction.
