Luxembourg, 18/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - An Istanbul-based Turkish SME operating in the automotive sector, Yedas Tarim ve Otomotiv Sanayi ve Ticaret has requested financial compensation for the damages it considers it has suffered due to EU customs procedures. These procedures stem from the so-called Association Agreement between the EC and Turkey of 1964, the Ankara Agreement, and the decision by the Association Council of 1995 on the implementation of the definitive stage of the customs union. According to the Turkish company, the EC failed to fulfil its obligations stemming from these texts, which providing for loans and subsidies to balance out the negative effects of the customs union on the Turkish economy. The company believes that the aid supplied was "inadequate", which worked to its disadvantage "in terms of fair competition" compared to other companies in the automotive sector.
