Turkey invited to European elections despite "itself"

Brussels, 19/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - We already knew that Turkey's accession to the EU would occupy pride of place in the German election campaign as the FDP has made it into one of its issues and the Christian unions remain opposed to it joining. The Christian unions prefer a privileged partnership with the country, as reaffirmed by Ms Merkel while on a visit to Turkey (EUROPE 18 February, p.4).
