Philippe Maystadt considers deficit rules could be revamped to take economic situation more into account

Brussels, 05/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - In an interview granted to Reuters on Thursday, Philippe Maystadt said in substance that EU rules aimed at ensuring that countries respect budget deficit and debt limits could be revamped to take more account of economic upturns. Evoking the European Commission's intention to make a proposal aimed at improving these rules, the former Belgian Finance Minister said that "this proposal will go in … the good direction of taking more account of the quality...
