12/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Foreign Trade association (FTA), representing the global trade sector in Europe, calls upon the world trade organisation to « revive » the Doha trade round during the meeting of is general council on 12 December as agreed in Cancun, in order to avoid the apprehended failure of talks. “Pascal Lamy has our full support regarding the reviving of the DDA negotiations but the EU cannot be the only WTO pacemaker”, Jan Eggert, Secretary general of the association, said. “All leading trade nations - Especially the US, Japan and Canada - as well as the leading development countries like Brazil, India and China, must make genuine efforts in order to reanimate the WTO process, before it turns into a sleeping beauty”, he warned, saying: “the lack of suggestions on how to proceed from other parties than the EU is more than disappointing”. The meeting of the 146 next Monday in Geneva at the highest level of the Institution (the general council) “must now provide a boost to the process”, he added.
