Brussels / Buenos Aires, 12/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Argentina is to challenge the legality of EU and US farm subsidies from the end of the truce that has lasted since 1995 under the "peace clause" of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Announcing his intention to cover the distance to Geneva early 2004, Economy Minister Roberto Lavagna specified during a seminar on food products then on a local radio station interview that Argentina - which is one of the leading producers of cereals, meat and other farm produce - is seeking to acquire compensation for the trade losses caused by the European and American systems. According to convergent sources, injury amounts to around $6 billion annually. We recall that the peace clause committed signatories of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture to abstain from attacking what they had promised to tolerate, and that the agreement reaches its expiry date on 31 December 2003.
