Brussels, 06/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday in Brussels, Commissioner Philippe Busquin awarded the five first prizes of the Marie Curie Prize. Worth Eur 50,000 each, these prizes, which were created with the 6th Framework Research Programme, should encourage high-level researchers who have achieved significant breakthroughs in the field of research, with the support of Marie Curie grants and subsidies granted by the EU. The winners are: - Paola Barbara Arimondo (United Kingdom), for her work on new anti-tumour agents based on conjugates of topoisomerase inhibitors (an enzyme present in all cells) and sequence-specific DNA ligands; - Daniel Bonn (the Netherlands), for his work on new frontiers in complex fluids; - Letitia Fernanda Cugliandolo (Argentina) for her work on a theoretical approach to the non-equilibrium dynamics of macroscopic systems evolving slowly; - Marco Dorigo (Italy), for his work on ant colony organisation; - Luis Serrano Pubull (Spain), for his work on design of biological systems to improve quality of life.
Moreover, Commissioner Busquin launched, on Monday in Brussels, the tenth European Science Week, which will develop a series of events, conference, debates, publications and exhibitions throughout the European Union lasting until mid-November, aimed at attracting more youths to jobs in science.
