29/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the Vatican nuncio in Turkey Monsignor Edmond Farhat, stated that the Vatican does not oppose Turkish accession to the European Union, which he does not see as a 'Christian club'. However, he also insisted on the completion of democratic reforms in Turkey (in particular, he reproaches Turkey for not legally recognising Christianity). Moreover, during a visit to Bucharest, the Italian Minister for Agriculture Giovanni Alemanno assured that, during his six month presidency, Italy would do its utmost to accelerate the accession negotiations for Romania (as well as Bulgaria) into the European Union. According to him, the Agriculture Chapter would be more complex to negotiate for Romania.
