Brussels, 29/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The meeting between the EU Troika and the Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Igor Ivanov on Tuesday in Moscow provided the occasion for preparing the EU/Russia summit on 6 November in Rome. The two sides discussed EU/Russian relations and the international situation. The affair involving the Russian oil company, Ioukos (the Head of which was arrested on Saturday in Moscow) could be tackled during the summit. With regard to the main international issues (Iran, Iraq, Middle East, Balkans, North Korea) the arena has been established for the EU and Russia. Christina Gallach, spokesperson for Javier Solana said that they were "working well with the Russians". Before the Rome Summit, "there are still some pending issues, such as the question of visas", she pointed out. The EU also outlined its position on Chechnya: a political settlement and not a military solution was needed. She also repeated hits position on Moldova (in conflict with the separatist republic of Transnistria from where Russian troops are expected to withdraw at the end of the year. Ms Gallach declared that, "Russian troops should withdraw in compliance with OSCE commitments".
