Brussels, 14/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is highly critical of the European Parliament's refusal to waive the immunity of Danish MEP Mogens Camre (UEN), and calls on it to go back on its decision. ENAR fails to understand the logic behind the European Parliament's decision, as this is the wrong signal to send to civil society and to citizens that uphold the Law, ENAR President Bashy Quraishy said. Mr Quraishy therefore calls on the EP to "recnsider its decision in light of the gravity of charges against Mr Camre and let the Court decide the course of justice". Waiving the immunity of the MEP, a member of Dansk Folkspart, had been requested by the Danish judicial system for Mogens Camre's racist remarks against Muslims during the national congress of his party in September 2001. While condemning these remarks, the European Parliament refused early July to lift the immunity, following its position of principle whereby immunity cannot be lifted for opinions expressed by an MEP in the context of his/her political activity (EUROPE of 2 July, p.16).
