Brussels, 14/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the European Commission welcomed the result of the ratification process for the treaty on accession by Cyprus. "The Commission congratulates Cyprus on ratification of the Accession Treaty. It demonstrates the strong will of Cyprus to join the European family of democratic nations as a member of the European Union, with equal rights and obligations", a press release reads. "The Commission is confident that Cyprus will play an important role in the development of the European integration process and looks forward to it. Once in the EU, Cyprus will take advantage of all the opportunities of membership", the press release adds. The Commission also restated on this occasion its support for the UN Secretary General for finding an overall solution to the problem of the island's division. Last week, Germany had completed its ratification procedure for the Accession Treaty.
