Eurostat confirms fall in level of inflation in April

Brussels, 19/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - As we already indicated, Euro-zone annual inflation fell from 2.4% in March to 2.1% in April 2003, as confirmed on Friday by Eurostat, whereas EU15 annual inflation fell from 2.3% in March to 1.9% in April 2003. In April, the highest annual rates were recorded in Ireland (4.6%), Portugal (3.7%) and Greece (3.3%); the lowest rates were observed in Germany (1.0%), Austria (1.2%) and Finland (1.3%). Compared with March 2003, annual inflation fell in thirteen Member States and rose only in Italy. Compared with April 2002, the biggest relative falls were in Finland (2.6% to 1.3%), the Netherlands (4.2% to 2.5%) and Germany (1.5% to 1.0%), and the biggest relative rises were in Luxembourg (1.9% to 3.0%), Italy (2.5% to 3.0%) and Portugal (3.5% to 3.7%). Lowest 12-month averages up to April 2003 were in Germany (1.1%), Belgium (1.3%), Austria and Finland (both 1.7%); highest were in Ireland (4.7%), Portugal (3.8%), Greece and Spain (both 3.7%).
