Towards scientific and technological cooperation agreement

Brussels, 19/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The EU and South Korea envisage negotiating a bilateral agreement for scientific and technological cooperation, it was announced by European Commissioner Philippe Busquin after a meeting with his Korean counterpart, Ho Koon Park, on Friday in Brussels. The two officials reviewed ways to strengthen cooperation in the research field, including possible participation by Korea in the ITER project (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) for research into energy fusion. They agreed to organise a "Korean Science Day" in Europe and a "European Science Day" in Korea. Like the Union, South Korea focuses its research effort on biotechnology, information technologies, both for the environment and space, and nanotechnology, among other priorities, and already devotes 3% of its GNP to research (a target that Europeans have undertaken to reach by 2010).
